There is Safety in Numbers
A Mathematics Enrichment Course

Duration: 12 hours

A set of mathematics topics beyond the scope of standard school mathematics
(prerequisite, elementary algebra)

The only prerequisite is that a student should have at least started algebra.

1) An extensive exploration of prime numbers including the answer to the following question: "Is the number of primes finite or infinite?" (We will answer the question and prove that our answer is correct.)

2) The rational, real and complex numbers. Proof that radical 2 is irrational.

3) The structure of mathematics (not just how to do mathematics). Groups, Rings and Fields.

4) Transfinite arithmetic.

5) Functions.

6) Other topics based on student interest.

Genes, DNA, the Genetic Code
and Stem Cells

Duration: 12 hours

Genes, the Genetic Code, DNA and Stem Cells

Students who take this class will gain a basic understanding of the fundamentals of genetics.  Starting with the basics of proteins, we build an understanding of the forms and functions of DNA (the double helix), chromosomes, genes, the genetic code and genetic diseases. We’ll conclude with a study of stem cells and cloning.

From Bits to Java
Understanding Computer Basics

1) Numbers written in bases other than ten. Adding of numbers written in base two.

2) The function of the following logic gates: AND, OR, NOT, EX-OR, NAND, NOR and FLIP-FLOP.

3) The function of a register.

4) How an electronic circuit adds two binary numbers.

5) How instructions control the operations of a computer.

6) How to combine computer instructions into a program.

7) Programing the BIGBIT computer.

8) Programing using the Java programming language.
